First 'Round The World' Solar-Powered Flight To Stop At JFK Airport
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says the first "round the world" flight by a solar-powered aircraft will make a stop at Kennedy Airport this spring.
The flight is called Solar Impulse 2. It follows Solar Impulse I, which completed the first transcontinental flight in 2013.
Port Authority officials say the experimental aircraft will take off from Abu Dhabi in late February or early March. It is expected to make a stop in New York in May or June.
Officials say they are working with the FAA to schedule a time when the flight will minimize any inconvenience to commercial passengers at JFK.
Solar Impulse 2 will have a wingspan of 236 feet. They say that is larger than a Boeing 747.
