Firefighters Work To Bring Yonkers Blaze Under Control
NEW YORK (AP) -- Yonkers firefighters were battling a four-alarm fire in a vacant building.
Fire Commissioner Anthony Pagano said about 45 people have been evacuated from two adjoining apartment buildings as a precaution. There were no reports of injuries.
Firefighters responded to the blaze at the five-story building at St. Andrews Place at 2:15 a.m. Thursday. Pagano said part of the roof collapsed a short time later.
The commissioner called the fire suspicious. He said someone had tried to set the building on fire several times in recent months.
He said once the blaze is under control residents of the other buildings will probably be allowed back in.
