6 Injured, One Critically, After Blaze Rips Through Yonkers Apartment Building
YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- At least six people were injured, one critically, after a fire ripped through a home in Yonkers early Wednesday.
The fire broke out at an apartment building on McLean Avenue at around 2 a.m., officials said. CBS2 reports the fire started at a second floor apartment and quickly spread to third floor apartments.
Most of the residents were able to evacuate the building on their own, but Yonkers firefighters had to carry two people out, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.
Deputy Chief Kevin Ford said one resident was seconds from death twice.
"We found one woman was in cardiac arrest in her apartment. She was hiding in her bathtub. the guys brought her out, did CPR, brought her back, put her in an ambulance," Ford said.
The woman went into cardiac arrest again on the way to Jacobi Hospital.
"The ambulance crew did a great job, brought her back again," Ford said.
The woman is now hospitalized in stable condition.
"I can honestly say that due to the tremendous effort of our firefighters that worked here last night, there are people alive this morning that would not be if they weren't there," Ford said. "Our guys did a great job."
One victim is listed in critical condition.
A dozen firefighters also suffered minor to moderate injuries, officials say.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
