Fire Island Residents Pick Up The Pieces From Sandy, If They Have Any Left
BABYLON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - It is estimated that eight out of every 10 homes on Fire Island were destroyed by superstorm Sandy.

"The glass sliders were blown in... Storm surge went through the house. Sand was deposited into the house. Fences blown. Decks torn off," said Christina Lomolino, whose house in Ocean Bay Park is one of the many that were destroyed or severely damaged.
Now she's just trying to pick the pieces.
"Me and all my neighbors are struggling to get through to insurance companies to get through to FEMA, to get through our banks to see if we can get forbearance while we're restoring our homes. Hopefully, we're not looking forward to months of these struggles with banks and insurance companies," she told WCBS 880's Irene Cornell.
Unfortunately, she fears that is what will happen.
"Hopefully, the authorities in the state of New York and the federal authorities will insist that mortgage companies offer some forbearance to their borrowers and that the insurance companies will readily pay without putting the homeowners through the ringer," she said.
