Fire Erupts At Nathan's Famous Restaurant At Coney Island
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A fire broke out this weekend at the original Nathan's Famous restaurant at Coney Island.
The fire broke out around 9:40 a.m. Saturday at the restaurant at 1310 Surf Ave. in Brooklyn, according to a New York Post report. Firefighters extinguished the blaze 20 minutes later, and there were no injuries, the newspaper reported.
Nathan's Famous was damaged during Superstorm Sandy in October of last year, and the restaurant was supposed to reopen this month. There was no word Sunday on whether the fire would impact the reopening schedule, 1010 WINS reported.
Much of the interior of the restaurant has been demolished for renovation in the months since Sandy, according to published reports.
Nathan's Famous was founded in 1916 by Polish immigrant Nathan Handwerker and his wife, Ida. The original restaurant has been located at the same site since it opened 97 years ago.
