It's not clear what sparked the blaze. Village Manager John Pierpont says it started at around 2 a.m. near the fuel tanker as it made an overnight delivery.
Pierpont told CBS2's Jay Dow a nearby vehicle inspection station was fortunately closed at the time of the blaze. The second floor of that structure is vacant.
However, firefighters worked feverishly to prevent the blaze from spreading to a warehouse full of mattresses which is also next to the gas station.
"We had that protected," Pelham Manor Fire Chief Joe Ruggiero said.
"The tanker truck, the trailer itself is aluminum," Ruggiero explained. "Whatever did not leave during the explosion has completely melted away. The rims are melted on the truck. We're talking high heat."
