6 Families Displaced After Apartment Building Fire In Yonkers
YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Firefighters were able to bring a large fire at a Yonkers apartment building under control Monday evening.
An explosion could be heard from the middle of the building just after 2 p.m. before the fire spread to all six of the apartments at 94 Saratoga Avenue, displacing all six families that lived there.
Around 5:30 p.m. firefighters were still battling to put out the flames in the upper floor of the three-story apartment building, but were eventually able to control it.

"About 25 minutes into it, the body of fire in the attic started getting larger and larger. For the safety of the firefighters we pulled the members out. Shortly thereafter, a large portion of the roof then collapsed onto the top floor," said Yonkers Fire Commissioner Robert Sweeney.
By that time, everyone was out and accounted for, including a disabled woman saved by her nurse Tashia Williams.
"I mean a lot of loss, but our lives were saved so that's the main part of everything," Williams told 1010 WINS' Sonia Rincon.
Neighbors said there were electrical and wiring problems in the building, but there is still no word on the official cause of the fire.
