Fence On Hempstead Turnpike Planned To Stop Dangerous Pedestrian Crossing
EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A 900-foot fence is set to be constructed in the middle of the busy Hempstead Turnpike, where crossing the busy roadway has put many people in danger.
As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, at least in front of Nassau County Medical Center in East Meadow, Long Island, pedestrians may not cross anywhere they want. They must use a crosswalk.
Those who work at the hospital hope the fencing will provide even more safety for pedestrians. One man who works across the street from the hospital said some pedestrians have suffered horrific consequences crossing the turnpike.

"When they cross the street, they get hit by a car," he said. "The best they should do is (put a fence) across the whole thing. Queens Boulevard, it's been working."
The man said he has seen people get hit on the turnpike.
"Died," he said. "They died."
Bob is a truck driver who hopes the new fence keeps people safe.
"When people cross, do cross the street, it does bother me," he said. "Because if somebody crosses, it's hard to stop a truck, especially when the roads are wet."
