FEMA Extends Temporary Housing Program For New York, New Jersey
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended the temporary housing programs for both New York and New Jersey, amid the damage of Superstorm Sandy.
In New York, the agency said the program which provides hotel or motel rooms to FEMA applicants whose homes were damaged by the storm will now extend to Dec. 14. In New Jersey, the program has been extended to Nov. 28.
The program, which began Nov. 3, was originally scheduled to require checkouts on Saturday.
The agency said it acted on requests by the states of New York and New Jersey.
Those applicants who have been approved for the transitional sheltering assistance program will receive an automated phone message to let them know they can remain in their temporary lodging. If their homes are inhabitable, they must leave the hotels.
Guests who are no longer eligible for the lodging program or have questions about their eligibility are asked to call the FEMA helpline, at (800) 621-FEMA (3362) or TTY, (800) 462-7585. They may also visit a local Disaster Recovery Center.
