FEMA Extends Deadline For Superstorm Sandy Insurance Paperwork
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Superstorm Sandy victims will have six more months to file critical paperwork for insurance payments.
Despite the government shutdown, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced Tuesday that it is providing an extension, giving those affected by the storm more time to submit an inventory of things they believe should be covered in any insurance settlement. The original deadline was the one-year anniversary of the storm, which struck the Northeast on Oct. 29, 2012.
Benjamin Rajotte, director of the Disaster Relief Clinic at the Touro Law Center on Long Island, said the extension will bring relief to thousands of homeowners in New York and New Jersey who are still fighting for a bigger flood insurance payment.
He said many were unaware of the deadline, and many more were unprepared to finish documenting their insurance claims by later this month.
