Feds: NYC Woman Hid Cash To Avoid Land Sale Tax
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Federal authorities said a New York City woman arrested at Kennedy Airport allegedly concealed $170,000 in her underwear to avoid paying taxes on the sale of property in Sudan.
According to the Daily News, a customs official testified in a Brooklyn court Monday that Claire Abdeldaim of Queens removed the underwear and placed it in her purse during a layover in Amsterdam on a flight from Khartoum last June.
The official said when she arrived at JFK, she declared only $17,000.
The 64-year-old woman was free on $100,000 bail. If convicted of the smuggling charge, she faces up to 21 months in prison.
Her lawyer said during cross-examination that the customs official wouldn't allow her to amend the declaration form.
