Feds May Fine Westchester County For Missing Water Quality Improvement Deadline
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Westchester County may face legal action and have to pay up $150,000 a month in fines to the U.S. Justice Department, after missing a deadline to improve water treatment in White Plains and Scarsdale.
The county decided a year and a half ago to pursue a $100 million, multi-year project to tap into the New York City ultraviolent purification system in Mount Pleasant and improve the water quality for White Plains and Scarsdale, according to the Journal News.

But as WCBS 880's Monica Miller reported, county officials found a way to avoid the huge costs by piping treated water from an existing connection to the city water supply, according to the newspaper. The county has been investigating whether that program can be made permanent, the newspaper reported.
But the Justice Department is still looking to pursue a legal settlement over the missed deadline, the newspaper reported.
In light of the Justice Department's actions, a county executive spokesman said the county wants to get into compliance and do it quick.
