Federal Prosecutors Seek 25-Year Sentence In Connecticut Terror Case
NEW HAVEN, CONN. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Federal prosecutors in Connecticut are seeking a 25-year prison sentence for a British citizen who pleaded guilty to supporting terrorists through websites.
According to court papers filed this week, prosecutors said Babar Ahmad supported Chechen fighters, the Taliban and al-Qaida with websites that sought cash, military equipment and personnel.
Prosecutors described the websites as among the first of their kind and called Ahmad's support "robust, far-reaching and virtually unparalleled.''
Ahmad's attorney argued the 10 years his client already spent in prison are enough punishment. He said Ahmad was trying to help Muslims under attack in Bosnia and Chechnya and that he deeply regrets his support for the Taliban in Afghanistan.
According to his attorney, the case is being closely watched in the Muslim world to see if a fair sentence will be imposed in July.
