Off-Duty NYPD Officer Killed, 2 Injured In Crash On FDR Drive
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An off-duty NYPD officer has been killed and two other people injured in a crash on the FDR Drive early Saturday morning.
Officers were called to the FDR Drive at East 23rd Street around 2:40 a.m. for a report of a single-vehicle crash.
Investigators say the driver of the Lexus sedan was traveling northbound on the FDR and crashed. The vehicle ended up on top of the center median. Police sources tell CBS2 the driver has been identified at Officer Garman Chen.
Two passengers, a 25-year-old off-duty FDNY firefighter and a 25-year-old woman, were thrown from the vehicle.
Officers found the Chen inside the wrecked vehicle. He was unconscious and had suffered severe head trauma.
All three were taken to Bellevue Hospital however, Chen was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
Both of the passengers are reported to be in serious but stable condition. The male passenger had injuries to his leg and torso. The female passenger had injuries to her leg and foot.
