FDNY-NYPD Baseball Game To Be Played Friday Night On Coney Island
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The annual NYPD vs. FDNY baseball game will be played in Coney Island on Friday night and some participants say fans should expect an intense game between the friendly rivals.
This game will be the third and last game of the 2011 Municipal Sports Series -- in which both firefighters and police officers compete in hockey, football and baseball.
The FDNY defeated the NYPD 5-4 in last year's game, but NYPD team manager Jose Vasquez said he is confident in his club. However, he says he would "definitely" consider them the "underdogs."
Win or lose, Vasquez said the game would be hard fought and well played.
"If there's a double play to be broken, it's going to be broken hard. If there's a contact play at the plate, it's going to be hard. Both teams, though we get along well, once we get in between the lines, there's no more friendship on the field," he said.
"We're there to win," Vasquez said, adding that many of the players have compete on the college and minor-league level.
"You are going to see a very good baseball game -- very competitive and very intense," he said.
The game is played to raise money for causes, including the New York Fire and Police Widow's and Children's Benefit Fund.
Friday night's game will be played at MCU Park, the home of the Brooklyn Cyclones at 7 p.m.
