The four-alarm fire broke out shortly before 3:30 a.m. at a home on 81st Street and Ridge Boulevard in Bay Ridge and quickly spread to a second house.
Right now, there's no word on what caused the fire but officials said heavy smoke was a problem for crews fighting the flames.
"You notice when you come down the block, it didn't go anywhere. The smoke just sits on the street," said Deputy Assistant Chief Kevin Butler. "You're taking a beating with the smoke when you're standing outside the building."
Two firefighters suffered heat and smoke related injuries. The occupants of both homes escaped the fire unharmed.
