FDA: Don't Eat Shellfish From Oyster Bay
OYSTER BAY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The Federal Drug Administration has issued a warning not to eat oysters or clams harvested from Oyster Bay Harbor in Nassau County after illnesses from the shellfish were reported in several states.
The FDA issued the warning on Friday.
It says the New York state Department of Environmental Conservation closed the waters to harvesting on July 13 after several cases of people getting sick from eating raw or partially cooked shellfish from the area were reported.
Anyone using or processing shellfish with tags saying that it came from Oyster Bay Harbor on or after June 1, 2012 should throw it away and not eat it, the FDA said.
The shellfish was distributed to Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, officials said.
Officials said the unusually warm water in Oyster Bay helped spread bacteria among oysters and clams.
The closure will remain in effect until samples show that the shellfish are safe to eat, the FDA said.
