FBI Releases Surveillance Videos, Photos Of Anna Chapman's Russian Spy Ring
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The FBI has its own "Ghost Story" for Halloween.
The Bureau released dozens of images, documents and surveillance videos from "Operation Ghost Stories," the investigation into the Russian spy ring that catapulted Anna Chapman to fame. Chapman worked as a real estate agent here in New York.
The FBI said the 10 spies were supposed to assimilate into American society and cultivate relationships with folks inside U.S. policymaking circles.
The spies pled guilty to conspiracy and were exchanged as part of a prisoner swap that was like something out of the cold war era.
The photos show some of the machinations the group used to pass information. One image shows a soda can stuffed next to a rock at what the FBI calls a "drop site," indicating that a package was left buried nearby for collection. Later, Michael Zuttoli is shown in a video digging the package up.
Another video shows Chapman meeting in a coffee shop with an undercover agent.
