Family Shocked As Escaped Convict Is Picked Up In Brooklyn After Decades On The Run
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A Brooklyn man has been captured after decades on the run. The arrest came as a shock to his family.
As CBS2's Steve Langford reported, Walter Miller a convicted bank robber in North Carolina escaped from prison in 1977, never to be captured. That is until authorities pounded on the door at a Prospect Lefferts Gardens apartment building looking for a man known as Bobby Love.
Miller, also known as Bobby Love, now has a wife and children in Brooklyn who apparently didn't know a thing about their father's previous life and prison break, until his arrest.
Next door neighbor Donna Powell said police were very respectful.
"They apologized for coming to his home at that hour and disturbing the family, and they didn't put cuffs on him til he got down the stairs," she said.
The Love family was not talking, but a neighbor spoke highly of them.
"Without asking, they'll knock on the door, give me what they have without asking. They're the perfect family," the single mother said.
The escaped convict's family weren't the only ones surprised by the news. A former landlord had some choice things to say.
Pansy McFarlane said the family had to be evicted a few years ago and still owes her $7,000 in unpaid rent.
"When you go asking for rent all of them come down on us, want to beat us," she said.
Love is now in custody at Rikers Island awaiting possible extradition back to North Carolina under his original name, Walter Miller.
He is being held without bail and is set to appear in court on February 26.
