Family Of Aspiring Actress Killed In Hit-And-Run Demand Changes To Union Square Intersection
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The family of a an aspiring actress killed by a hit-and-run dump truck driver in Union Square wants the city to make the intersection safer for pedestrians.
Roxana Buta, 21, was struck around 1:30 a.m. on May 24 while crossing Broadway at East 14th Street as she headed home from her job as a waitress, police said.
Her mother, Christina Oprea, will speak at a rally Thursday afternoon in Union Square, calling on the city to take action to prevent future accidents in the area.
"It is a very dangerous intersection, that's all I can tell you," Oprea told 1010 WINS. "A lot of people died there through the years and they know that."
Oprea is also demanding answers from officials two weeks after being told by police that the driver of the truck was a Department of Transportation worker. He has not been arrested.
"We are waiting for investigation results right now and I hope it won't be let go like negligence," Oprea said.
