Fail Twice, Try Again: Wal-Mart Seeks NYC Anchor
NEW YORK (AP) -- After failing twice to open stores in New York City because of community opposition, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is trying again.
A spokesman for the Bentonville, Ark.-based company tells The New York Times in its web edition Sunday that the retailer is looking at sites throughout the city.
Spokesman Steven Restivo said that would include parcels far smaller than what it typically seeks for its stores.
The company also has hired Mayor Michael Bloomberg's former campaign manager to oversee its lobbying efforts. Bloomberg had supported the company's failed effort to redevelop a Bronx site into a commercial complex.
The City Council plans to hold a meeting in January to discuss the company's latest effort.
Labor unions, community groups and elected officials have led successful anti-Wal-Mart campaigns.
