Eye On Politics: Rep. Jim Himes Appointed To Intelligence Committee
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The 113th Congress is underway and Rep. Jim Himes, Democrat of Connecticut has a new assignment.
He's been appointed to the intelligence committee, something he's sought for a while.
"This is something I'm really excited about for a bunch of reasons," Himes told WCBS 880's Steve Scott. "It's the committee, of course, which oversees the United States' intelligence community and, as we've seen very recently in the discussion about the President's use of drones, there are really profound and important issues balancing the need, of course, to be very aggressive and take the fight to terrorists with the need to make sure that we do it consistent with out values, consistent with the law [and that] those issues are dealt with in committee."
"I'm also really excited about the fact that if you look sort of 50, 60 years ago, the threats that we faced were threats that you countered with tanks in Germany or ballistic missiles and whatnot and it's not that world has gone away, but more and more of the threats that we face today as a country are going to be threats that will be identified quietly and countered more by the intelligence community probably than by the Department of Defense," he said.
Scott and Himes's full conversation can be heard below.
