Expert Offers Tips On How To Help Someone Struggling With Prescription Drug Addiction

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Earlier this week, New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said an oxycodone epidemic is running rampant through the state. But if you suspect someone in your life is battling a prescription drug addiction, there are ways you can help.

Dr. Deni Carise, chief clinical officer of Phoenix House, a substance abuse treatment center, says there are a number things you can do.

First, Carise says you should express your concerns about their use in a non-judgmental way and ask if they are willing to talk to an expert.

If they are, you can then help them find a treatment program. To find a treatment program, you can call 1-800-Drug Help or search for "find a treatment program" online.

Finally, identify a nearby licensed program that serves their age and gender and then help them schedule an appointment and if possible, accompany them to that appointment.
