Ex-Riverdale Country School Teacher Convicted Of Raping Student

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Manhattan jury on Friday found a former high school math teacher guilty of raping a 16-year-old student in 2011.

Richard Hovan was convicted in Manhattan Supreme Court Friday. His attorney said the jury got it wrong and Hovan will appeal.

Hovan, 33, was convicted of five counts of third-degree rape, three counts of third-degree criminal sexual act and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said Hovan emotionally manipulated his victim, a teenage girl who attended the Bronx private school where he taught.

Prosecutors say Hovan called, texted and emailed the student before finally engaging in sexual intercourse a number of times in his Manhattan apartment in 2011.

Hovan had taught at the Riverdale Country School, a prestigious private school in the Bronx. Alumni include the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

Hovan is scheduled to be sentenced March 24.
