NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) — Former Islanders coach Ted Nolan has been hired to lead Latvia's national team.
The Latvian Ice Hockey Federation said Wednesday that it expects to sign a contract with the ex-NHL Coach of the Year within a couple of days.
The 53-year-old Nolan was selected from a list of five candidates and is expected to arrive in Riga at the end of the month. In addition to his two seasons on Long Island, Nolan coached the Buffalo Sabres from 1995-97.
Nolan was 147-140-19-21 in the NHL, winning the Jack Adams Award as the league's top coach in 1997 with Buffalo.
He most recently was vice president of hockey operations for the AHL's Rochester Americans.
