Environmentally Friendly Police Precinct Opens On Staten Island
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - For the first time in more than 50 years, a new police precinct has opened on Staten Island.
As WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported, Mayor Michael Bloomberg was on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the 121st Precinct located at 970 Richmond Avenue in the Graniteville section of Staten Island.
The new station house resembles a giant stapler, Lamb reported.

One end of the building is anchored to a hill while a huge portion of the building projects cantilevered into the air, Lamb reported.
"Over the past 12 years, we have made historic progress in fighting crime on Staten Island and across the entire city," said Mayor Bloomberg in a statement. "Today, we are formally dedicating the home of the NYPD's newest police precinct – the first new precinct on Staten Island in more than 50 years. The new 121st Precinct is designed to meet the needs of the growing borough of Staten Island and is a major investment in continuing to reduce crime."
The facade is stainless steel, making the 121 look nothing like any other NYPD precinct house, Lamb reported.
Cutting-edge, he said, doesn't even come close to describing the new station house.
Staten Island's fourth police precinct is the NYPD's most environmentally friendly station in the city, according to a release from the mayor's office. It is expected to meet Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification.
"With the dedication of the new 121st Precinct station house we demonstrate our resolve to keep the foundation of public safety on Staten Island strong, well into the future," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said in a statement.
More than 200 NYPD officers and other personnel work out of the precinct, which serves the Willowbrook, Westerleigh, Port Richmond, Mariners Harbor, Elm Park, Port Ivory, Chelsea and Bloomfield communities.
