Environmentalist Takes On LIPA For Not Using Energy Saving Program

UNIONDALE, NY (WCBS 880) - The Long Island Power Authority's Edge program calls on 36,000 volunteers to raise air conditioner temperature levels and shut off pool pumps during peak energy use times, like during a heat wave.

But Adrienne Esposito from the Citizens Campaign for the Environment says that LIPA did not use the program when temperatures soared over 100 degrees last month.

In fact, the utility has not used the program since 2009.

"We need all of our utility companies to really look at saving energy, not promote energy use, because that's what makes money," Esposito told WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall. "It is actually deeply disturbing that LIPA has not this cost-saving and energy-saving program for the last several years. It actually boggles the mind."

She said the program saves many megawatts of power, is good for the environment, and saves millions of dollars for customers.

Michael Hervey, LIPA's chief operating officer, told Newsday that they didn't activate the Edge program because they had plenty of extra power.
