Worker Uses Chair To Chase Hammer-Wielding Robbery Suspects Out Of Jewelry Store
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An employee used a chair to chase away two hammer-wielding suspects who police said were trying to steal jewelry from a store on the Upper East Side.
It happened around 4 p.m. Sunday at Travers Fine Jewelry on Madison Avenue at 76th Street. The entire incident was captured on the store's surveillance video.
As one suspect enters the store after ringing the doorbell, he holds the door open for the second suspect, who quickly walks in behind him, police said.
That's when the two each pulled out a hammer and started yelling "don't move!" at the employees, police said.
The second suspect is then seen on the video smashing a display case with his hammer as the first suspect wrestles with one of the employees in the doorway.
Suddenly, another employee is seen running up to the suspects brandishing a chair and chased the duo out of the store, police said.
The employee held at the door praised his co-worker to CBS 2's John Slattery.
"He's a wonderful guy. He's a hero," the employee said.
The suspects made off with several pieces of jewelry worth about $15,000, police said. No one was injured. Other merchants in the area told Slattery because the jewelry store deals in gold and diamonds, it's been hit before.
Police described the first suspect as a male, approximately 5-foot-9, weighing 165 pounds and wearing a black jacket and ski cap. The second suspect is described as a male, approximately 6-2, weighing 200 pounds and wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt.
