Ellis Island Not Expected To Reopen This Year
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - A popular New York destination badly damaged by superstorm Sandy will not reopen this year as repairs are made.
The National Park Service announced that Ellis Island Immigration Museum "will not likely be open in 2013'' due to the damage.
The island, adjacent to the one that is home to the Statue of Liberty, sustained severe damage to its infrastructure in the Oct. 29 storm.
Last week, the federal officials announced Lady Liberty would be reopened in time for the July 4 holiday this year as repairs continue.
The park service made the announcement about Ellis Island Friday, as it said that security screening for visitors to the Statue of Liberty would be moving to temporary facilities on Ellis Island.
The storm brought water levels as high as eight feet to the islands, destroying boilers and electrical systems.
The collection of artifacts at the Ellis Island museum was unharmed, but had to be moved because it wasn't possible to maintain the climate-controlled environment necessary for preservation.
