Eli On WFAN: We've Come Back From Adversity Before, And We Can Do It Again
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Sunday night couldn't have gone much worse for the Giants.
The Giants lost wide receiver Victor Cruz to a devastating injury, and Big Blue was thoroughly dominated by the Eagles from start to finish.
The defense couldn't stop Nick Foles and LeSean McCoy, the offensive line couldn't protect Eli Manning and costly penalties were committed frequently. It resulted in a 27-0 drubbing that killed New York's momentum following three straight victories.
Eli Manning
"It caught us by surprise," the two-time Super Bowl MVP told WFAN host Mike Francesa in his weekly spot on Monday. "I thought we had a good week of practice, I thought we had a good game plan and I thought we were going to be able to move the ball and hit some big plays ... It just didn't work out that way. We just never got in a whole lot of great situations."
Manning didn't play terrible football, completing 13 of 23 passes for 151 yards and no interceptions. But he was pressured all night and barely had any time to throw, leading to six sacks for 32 yards.
With Rashad Jennings on the shelf, the running game was nonexistent. Andre Williams and Peyton Hillis combined for just 82 yards on the ground.
And the defense was torched for 248 passing yards and 203 rushing yards.
"We were prepared for what they were doing," the captain told Francesa. "They just beat us in some scenarios ... We didn't win some of our battles at receiver. It's a little bit of everybody (who's) responsible when that happens. We didn't make the big mistakes, we didn't let the pressure lead to turnovers. The game could have been worse than what it was."
It's safe to say that Sunday night's game was a serious step back for the G-Men. But the Giants have historically been a resilient group.
This is, remember, a team that won three straight games after dropping the first two.
Next on the schedule? A Cowboys team that is playing brilliantly. After the Week 8 bye, New York has the Colts, the Seahawks, the 49ers and the Cowboys in succession.
All this team can do is forget about Sunday and prepare for the weeks ahead. Manning is up to the challenge.
"The great thing about football (is) it doesn't really matter what happened the week before," Manning said. "It's all about what happens this week. How are we gonna prepare? How are we gonna practice? And we've gotta go out there and create our own breaks. We've gotta make 'em. We've gotta make some plays, and we've gotta play better.
"We gotta put those (mistakes behind us), get ready for this week and go into Dallas and play a better football game."
