Elderly Woman Struck, Killed After Driver Jumps Curb On Upper East Side
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An elderly woman was killed Friday afternoon by a driver officials say jumped a curb on Manhattan's Upper East Side.
Investigators say the driver of a Range Rover careened onto the sidewalk while trying to make a left turn near the corner of Madison Avenue and 79th Street.
It was there where 84-year-old Nahid Taghinia-Milani was struck right outside a doorman building. The SUV missed Philip Zamora by just a few feet, and he says the driver didn't appear to be injured.
"When she come out from the car she said 'oh I have a break problem'," said Zamora.
Medics responded and pronounced Taghinia-Milani dead at the scene. Upper East Siders say the area is starting to become known for its dangerous intersections.
"This is the third accident I know of in a very short period of time," said Upper East Side resident Joel Ackerman said. "They've got to do something about it."
Others say the city has tried to make Madison Avenue safer for pedestrians in the past year.
"They went out of their way to make it safer to make the turn," resident Carol Schulman said. "You can't just make the turn, you have to be careful with the cones and the paint."
The driver remained at the scene, and there were no immediate arrests as the investigation continued.
