"A woman who was exiting, dropped a wallet out of her shopping cart. Another woman came by, picked it up, and put it directly into her purse," says Janet Downs of Suffolk County Crime Stoppers. "It had clear identification in it and the woman who picked it up, made absolutely no attempt to get in touch with the person who lost it."

She continued shopping, exiting at about 12:00 p.m. and then proceeding to what appeared to be a blue or green Toyota Rav4.

The incident happened at the Walmart at 765 Old Country Road in Riverhead on May 31.

"It is against the law. You'd be breaking the law and also it's just not the decent thing to do," Downs says. "If someone finds a $10 bill on the ground, that's a different situation"

"We're just hoping that someone will be able to identify her and justice will take its course," says Downs.

Downs says it's a message for anyone who thinks finder's keepers is the way of the world.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential. Suffolk County Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
