Elderly Woman Dies In Fire In Crown Heights, Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A woman who was reportedly 91 years old died early Monday, in an apartment building fire in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn.
Around 4:35 a.m., police responded to a 911 call for a fire in the building at 587 Franklin Ave. in Brooklyn. After firefighters extinguished the flames, police found an elderly woman unconscious on the second floor, police said.
The woman was rushed to Interfaith Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said.
The police release on the fire did not include the woman's name, but the New York Daily News identified her as Olga Bates, 91, a retired cafeteria worker.
The Daily News reported the fire broke out in the Organic Deli Grocery on the ground floor of the building, and spread to the second level of the four-story building. The deli recently had been renovated, the newspaper reported.
The New York City Medical Examiner's office will determine the cause of death, police said. The cause of the fire was under investigation Monday night, police said.
