Educated on Ebola, Giants Ready To Take Every Precaution When They Go To Dallas
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The Giants face a tough opponent this weekend, but are preparing for another another just as carefully.
Big Blue takes on the 5-1 Cowboys on Sunday in a key NFC East matchup, but the game, at least for now anyway, is somewhat on the back burner due to the Ebola crisis that has engulfed Dallas.
The Giants are taking every precaution, team spokesperson Pat Hanlon told the Daily News.
"No, nothing out of the ordinary other than providing background and info on the disease," Hanlon told the newspaper via email in response to question about the precautions the team is taking.
"Our athletic trainers and team physicians have been briefed on the scope of the Ebola virus disease. We have distributed a fact sheet to our employees and distributed similar information to our players electronically this morning. The league is working very closely with Duke University's Infectious Disease Department (DICON/Duke Infection Control Outreach Network) and we will also rely on state and local health departments and the Centers for Disease Control regarding new information pertinent to this outbreak," Hanlon added.
A second Dallas hospital worker who has tested positive for Ebola after providing care for the first Ebola patient diagnosed in the U.S. was on a flight a day before she reported symptoms, officials said Wednesday.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the worker flew on Frontier Airlines flight 1143 from Cleveland to Dallas/Fort Worth on Monday.
The airplane's crew said the worker had no symptoms of Ebola during the flight. But the next morning she developed a fever and on Tuesday night tested positive for Ebola.
Infected Ebola patients are not considered contagious until they have symptoms.
Giants players said they have complete faith in the team employees responsible for their health.
"We've got great doctors around us. We expect them to take care of us. Our only mindset is to go down there and get a win. Everything else is not in our hands," offensive lineman Will Beatty said.
"No, I don't worry about myself or my team," quarterback Eli Manning said. "With what we're doing and where we're staying, I think we'll be OK."
Safety Antrel Rolle said the Giants can't use the unique conditions as an excuse.
"Whether we have worries or not, it doesn't make a difference. We still have to go play the game. The game has to be played," Rolle said. "We've got to be there. Can't worry about things you can't control."
