Voters Head To The Polls To Decide On $58 Million Bond For East Ramapo Schools
EAST RAMAPO, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A $58 million bond is up for a vote Tuesday in the cash-strapped East Ramapo school district.
Leaky roofs, drafty windows, broken down boilers, and unstable bleachers plague the aging East Ramapo schools, WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported.
"For several years the district performed essentially no maintenance or upkeep on these buildings and now we're paying a price for that," said parent David Curry, who will be voting yes. "I think it's critical that we do it with the bond because the state is committed to paying half of the money."
Historically, tax increases are not popular in the district, where most students attend private yeshivas. Voters rejected a $40 million bond in 2015, Adams reported.
A state monitor is keeping watch to balance the needs of all students.
The superintendent has also been working to gain support within the Orthodox Jewish community.
