East Orange Officer Shoots, Wounds Suspect Waving Machete
EAST ORANGE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - An investigation is under way following a police-involved shooting in East Orange, New Jersey on Saturday night.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, an East Orange police officer fired on a suspect during a traffic stop at Central Avenue and Eppirit Street around 9 p.m. on Saturday.
The suspect approached the officer while waving a machete, authorities said.
The officer ordered the suspect to drop the weapon, but the man refused and continued toward the officer.
Authorities said the officer, fearing for his life, then fired and struck the man.
The 28-year-old suspect from Irvington was hospitalized as the investigation continues.
No word on whether any charges have been filed.
