Police: Woman Pistol-Whipped During Attempted Robbery In East New York
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Police were hunting for two suspects late Thursday afternoon after a woman was pistol-whipped in East New York, Brooklyn.
As CBS2's Alice Gainer reported, the incident happened around 1:20 p.m. at Dumont and Montauk avenues. Nearly four hours later, Montauk Avenue was still taped off near the woman's apartment.
Police said the 43-year-old woman, identified by her cousin as Sam, was taking out the trash when the two men came up to her.
She was pistol-whipped and the men took off.
Police believe robbery was the motive, but it was unclear what, if anything, they took. The victim's cousin said she sells costume jewelry, but otherwise could not understand why she would be a target.
"She's a really good woman," said cousin Robert Santiago. "She helps the community. She's all around, like everybody knows her. She's known for selling jewelry. They must have thought it was real jewelry -- that's why they did it."
The woman was taken to Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in an unknown condition.
