East Haven Police Commission Recommends Firing Police Chief Amid Scandal
EAST HAVEN, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- East Haven, Conn. Police Chief Leonard Gallo has already tendered his resignation, but that wasn't good enough for the town's police commissioners.
In a 5-0 vote Tuesday night, the commissioners said the mayor should fire Gallo to prevent him from collecting a lump sum severance payment of up to $120,000 while an investigation into four of his officers and his department continues. They said the police chief failed to provide leadership.
Four East Haven cops are facing federal charges of discriminating against Latinos. Gallo's lawyer Jon Einhorn says his client is an unnamed co-conspirator in the federal indictment.
Einhorn says if any charges are brought, the chief will be vindicated. On Monday, Gallo announced his retirement effective on Friday.
