1 dead, 3 injured in shooting at Brooklyn apartment building
NEW YORK -- One person was killed and three were injured in a shooting at a Brooklyn apartment building Saturday.
It happened around 1:30 p.m. in the basement of a building on East 45th Street off Snyder Avenue in East Flatbush.
Detectives were at the scene for hours, trying to figure out who pulled the trigger and why.
Police say when officers arrived, two of the victims -- a 27-year-old woman who had been shot in the torso and a 39-year-old man who had been shot in the head -- were unconscious. A 40-year-old man who had been shot in the leg was conscious and alert.
All three victims were taken to a local hospital, where the 39-year-old, identified as Emmanuel Soray, was pronounced dead.
The 27-year-old woman remains in critical condition.
A fourth victim, a 33-year-old woman who was shot in the arm and buttocks, transported herself to a New Jersey hospital. She is expected to be OK.
Neighbors were disturbed to hear about the violence.
"Very upset. I have young kids and I have a grown son, and this is very dangerous. It's broad daylight and it's not safe. There's a day care over there, a church behind us. It has to stop. Gun control has to get intact. It's too much. It's overwhelming," one neighbor said.
It's unclear what let up to the shooting.
"I've been living over here for about 30 years and it hasn't happen in a long while," a neighbor said.
According to the NYPD's crime stats, shootings are down across the city. There have been 148 so far this year, compared to 187 the same time last year.
Rev. Terry Lee, with Byways and Hedges Youth for Christ Ministry, says it's not about the numbers, though, it's about the gun violence and the lives lost and affected. He's been showing up to crime scenes in Brooklyn with a prayer van for 30 years, playing music and hoping to heal communities.
"People are traumatized right now. People need some healing. You know, people are fearful. People don't know who may do what, who's coming back, who's looking for what. So when you can come in the midst of a crisis and you can bring some hope and healing for the community, it is needed," he said.
Detectives say no arrests have been made in Saturday's shooting. There is no description of the suspect.
