Dwight Freeney: 'Playing For The Giants Would Be A Dream'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Dwight Freeney has always been a New York kind of guy.
Born in Hartford, Conn., the outside linebacker grew up a Giants fans and idolized the legendary Lawrence Taylor. After attending high school in Bloomfield, Conn., the 33-year-old played his collegiate ball at Syracuse University in upstate New York.
Now, 13 years after being drafted by the Indianapolis Colts, the seven-time Pro Bowler may get the opportunity to play for the team he loved as a youngster.
Freeney is looking for a job after he was informed by the Colts on February 15 that he would not be re-signed, and he's excited about the possibility of joining the G-Men.
"Playing in New York would be attractive," Freeney told SiriusXM Radio. "Playing for (the Giants) would be a dream."
If general manager Jerry Reese decides to cut ties with veteran Osi Umenyiora, there could be a need for Freeney on the defensive side of the ball.
A three-time First-Team All-Pro and the AFC Defensive Player of the Year in 2005, the 10th-year player will likely receive calls from numerous general managers.
His old teammate, Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, has already begun to recruit Freeney to join the reigning AFC West champions.
"He sent me a text and he just said, 'Hey man, don't worry, come play with me in Denver,'" Freeney told ProFootballTalk. "I don't know how serious it was but, you know, it's good to hear some of your former teammates still follow you. They care and they want to see you succeed."
The 6-foot-1, 268-pounder recorded 12 tackles, five sacks and a forced fumble in 14 games in 2012. He has amassed 10-plus sacks seven times in his career, including 2004 when he led the NFL with 16.
We know he's not the player that he once was, but any interest, Giants fans? Sound off with your thoughts and comments below...
