The ATMs were not in gas stations or fast food restaurants, but at Citibank locations in Nassau County, according to police Detective Mike Bitsko.
Bitsko told WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall that two men are under arrest for putting skimming devices on the machines, stealing the personal information from customers' credit and debit cards.
In the end, the men are accused of stealing over $17,000 dollars.
The detective said there are ways to protect yourself.
"Usually they have more than one machine there. Take a look. If your card doesn't fit in correctly or if your card seems to have trouble while you're trying to put it into the machine, look at the other ATMs and see if they look similar in their appearance. If it looks like something's different, notify the bank manager," he told WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall.
