L.I. Drivers Urged To Pay Traffic Fines Ahead Of Boot And Tow Program

Nassau County drivers who think they've managed to avoid paying certain tickets are about to get a rude awakening.

Starting next Monday, the county will begin booting or towing away vehicles to collect unpaid fines from scofflaws with three or more outstanding parking and red light camera tickets.
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano unveiled the new scofflaw patrol vans -- equipped with license plate readers -- on Monday.

"It will be actively seeking those that have three or more parking tickets or red light tickets and it will boot you," Mangano said. "Two days later, it will tow your vehicle."
The boot will cost $166 to remove and towing will cost $125.
The movement is part of an effort by the cash-strapped county to recover much-needed revenue.
The county estimates it is owed some $49 million in unpaid traffic tickets.
