Driver Charged In Deadly William Floyd Parkway Crash Has License Suspended
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The Long Island man charged in a crash on William Floyd Parkway that left two people dead has had his driver's license suspended.
Police said Thomas Smith, 20, was high on prescription drugs and behind the wheel early Saturday morning when his truck veered off the road and slammed into a tree in Ridge.
His girlfriend, 19-year-old Jacqueline Salvador, and another passenger, 17-year-old Ryan Baumgartner, were ejected from the vehicle and killed.
Another 17-year-old passenger suffered non-life threatening injuries. A 16-year-old female passenger was not hurt.
The group was headed back from a night at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey.
Smith was released from jail Sunday after his family posted $150,000 bond. He is charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired on drugs.
Charges may be upgraded pending toxicology results.
Smith's lawyer said his client had taken a legal muscle relaxant, Flexeril, before the crash.
Smith is due back in court next month.
