Driver Accused In Deadly William Floyd Parkway Wreck Released From Jail
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The families of two teenagers killed in a wreck on the William Floyd Parkway over the weekend were outraged Sunday after the driver in the deadly crash was released from jail.
Thomas Smith, 20, was released after his family posted $150,000 bond. He is charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired on drugs.
Police said Smith was high on prescription drugs and behind the wheel early Saturday morning when his truck veered off the road and slammed into a tree in Ridge.
His girlfriend, 19-year-old Jacqueline Salvador, and another passenger, 17-year-old Ryan Baumgartner, were ejected from the vehicle and killed.
"He killed my son and he got bail," Baumgartner's mother said.
Another 17-year-old passenger suffered non-life threatening injuries. A 16-year-old female passenger was not hurt.
The group was headed back from a night at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey.
