Dozens Of Dogs Rescued By North Shore Animal League From Miss. Up For Adoption
PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Dozens of dogs rescued from a storm ravaged region of Mississippi are now up for adoption in New York.
More than 60 dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds brought to North Shore Animal League's Port Washington adoption center are now ready to find new, loving homes.
The pups were rescued from a shelter in Mississippi where a possible tornado destroyed and damaged buildings at the St. Francis Animal Sanctuary in Tylertown on Aug. 9.
When the storm hit, one of the shelter's 350 dogs was killed and another was critically hurt when a wall was blown into one of the buildings.
North Shore's emergency rescue team arrived in Tylertown on Aug. 17 with blankets, food and other pet supplies.
They then loaded up 63 dogs and puppies and drove back to Long Island where the pooches were seen by a veterinarian and evaluated.
"After providing emergency support and transporting animals to the safety of our campus, we know our job isn't done," John Stevenson, President of Animal League America, said in a statement.
Now, all 63 are ready to be adopted. Some of the breeds include Chihuahuas, shepherds, Catahoulas, terriers, collies and lab mixes.
"No rescue effort is complete until an animal is adopted into a permanent, loving home," Stevenson said.
