1 Teen Killed, 1 Wounded In Shooting In Downtown Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Two teenage boys were struck, and one of them was killed, in a shooting in downtown Brooklyn Monday evening.
The shooting happened at DeKalb Avenue and the Flatbush Avenue Extension around 6 p.m., officials told CBS2. Crime scene tape was set up, and blood was seen on the sidewalk, near the Applebee's at 395 Flatbush Avenue Extension -- across DeKalb Avenue from Long Island University.
The scene is also adjacent to the DeKalb Avenue subway station, serving the B, Q and R trains.
As CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported, exclusive surveillance video showed the moments of chaos before the shooting. A group of teens took off running down the sidewalk on the Flatbush Avenue Extension -- the gunman among them.
Seconds later, the group scattered and victim who was shot in the ankle was seen hopping away. The boy who was shot in the head left behind the pool of blood in front of the busy restaurant.
"Just a kid on a stretcher -- he got hit in the head," a witness said. "It's really sad. His brother was over here crying; his family, his sister, whoever -- it was really sad."
The boy wounded in the head was taken to The Brooklyn Hospital Center, where he was later pronounced dead, police sources said. The other victim was taken to New York Methodist Hospital, and was expected to survive, police told CBS2.
Witnesses said a fight between a large group of teens sparked the shooting, and it was possibly gang related. The fight started at one end of the block and then moved to the other – before ending with the shooting in front of the subway station.
"I was coming across the street and I saw a bunch of young kids going crazy, and they ended up fighting over there," the witness said. "Everybody was surrounding it. I couldn't see the middle of it; I didn't see nothing that happened, but next thing you heard is, 'Boom, boom, boom, boom, and that was it."
"Then we hear 5 or 6 shots go off and all these crazy commotion," another witness said.
Shell casings were seen scattered along the sidewalk. One of the bullets even went through a parked Enterprise car rental van.
Store employees along the block said teens from nearby schools are always disturbing the peace in the area, and police need to do more to keep the area safe.
"This is out of control. It's a bunch of animals," the second witness said. "This is going to keep on happening if you don't have any patrol out here."
Police recovered the gun a few blocks away, but the shooter was still at large late Monday.
