Donations Help Newark St. Philip's Academy Pay Off Mortgage

NEWARK, NJ (WCBS 880) - They're burning the mortgage at St. Philip's Academy in Newark.

"It's really exciting and it just says to us, 'Okay. There is another chapter finished,'" said Miguel Brito, the head of school there.

Brito says they got several anonymous gifts totaling $22 million, paying off the mortgage.

"That's also cool because money that would have otherwise gone into interest charges can now go directly to kids," he told WCBS 880 reporter Levon Putney.

They might spruce up their rooftop garden, their learning kitchen or the video conferencing for students.

"Kids were talking to engineering students at Virginia Tech about robotics," said Brito.

They've even video conferenced with a diver in Australia as part of a coral reef project.

The school houses students grades K-8.
