Don Mattingly Trades Uniform For Dress, Wig In 'The Nutcracker'
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Hit Man. Donnie Baseball.
Mother Ginger?!
That's right. All-time Yankees great Don Mattingly stepped out of his Dodger blues and into a dress this weekend to take the stage in "The Nutcracker."
"Kind of cool getting out on that limb a little bit," Mattingly told WTVW after his performance. "Getting out of your comfort zone, doing something you aren't usually involved with."
The 1985 American League MVP showed off his theatrical side at the Victory Theatre in his hometown of Evansville, Ind.
He even managed to put his own spin on the holiday classic. A young boy in a Dodgers uniform was seen dancing in the chorus, and a rosey-cheeked Mattingly managed to throw in a few baseball signs for good measure.
Mattingly boasts a career batting average of .307 over 14 seasons -- all with the Yankees. The 50-year-old managed the Dodgers to a 82-79 record this season, his first year at the helm in Los Angeles.
As for the video (check it out here), Mattingly can count on a good-hearted ribbing from his players before the start of next season.
"I know in spring training the video will surface somewhere," he said.
