Domestic Violence Homicides On The Rise In New York State
NEW YORK (WCBS 880 / AP) - It's an alarming trend - people continuing to kill members of their own family.

A new report shows that overall domestic violence homicides are up in New York by 10 percent.
There were 131 in 2009 and a 144 in 2010.
State Division of Criminal Justice Services acting commissioner Sean Byrne says what's most startling is that the latest reports found that, for the second year in a row, 44 percent of all woman killed in New York were killed by an intimate partner.
"That means the least safe place for a woman in New York state is her own home," he told WCBS 880 reporter Catherine Cioffi.
Byrne says this just goes to show you that domestic violence is a serial crime.
He says they are working with police to increase their training to identify domestic violence early.
"New York State has taken the lead in improving training for police officers," said Byrne.
There was one good piece of news in today's report. The number of homicides by spouses and other "intimate partners'' declined 19 percent, to 73 deaths.
