DOE: Suspensions, Arrests Of NYC Students Have Dropped
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Suspensions and arrests of students have dropped in the past year, according to the New York City Department of Education.
The department said Tuesday there were 28,994 suspensions between July 1, 2014 and March 22, 2015. That's 10 percent fewer than the total of 32,164 during the same period a year earlier.
Arrests in schools dropped from 267 to 225 – a decline of 16 percent decline.
Major crime dropped 9 percent from 449 reported incidents to 408.
Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña said her department is committed to improving the school atmosphere for students in all of the city's five boroughs.
The Department of Education is required to report the data to the City Council.
Council Education Committee Chairman Daniel Dromm (D-25th) said he is pleased to see that suspensions have declined.
